Babies grow quickly and so does their world. As they become more mobile, babies tend to spend an increasing amount of their time outside.

While lots of fresh air is wonderfully healthy for a baby, lots of sun is not. As we all know, the potential long-term skin problems that can ensue from early exposure to UV rays cannot be taken lightly.

Our first duty is to cover-up our babies as well as we can. However, if babies are going to be in the sun they also need the added protection of a sunscreen—just like mommy does.

Unfortunately, using a sunscreen exactly like mommy’s is probably not a good idea because the formulations of most adult sunscreens contain skin-penetrating chemical sunscreens.

Although the original and much maligned chemical sunscreens PABA, (para-aminobenzoic acid) is not as ubiquitous as a few years ago, a less effective alternative octyl methoxycinnamate, is present in over 90 percent of sunscreen brands, plus various salicylates and benzophenones are also extensively used.

All of these chemicals, to some degree, are proven irritants to sensitive skin and capable of stimulating profound allergic reaction. Imagine their potential effect on a baby’s ultra sensitive skin.

Baby SunSafe Cream SPF 30+ is a highly protective (SPF 30) formulation that employs only the mineral based physical blockers micronized zinc oxide and titanium dioxide as the active ingredients.

These naturally sourced physical blockers cover over (but do not penetrate) the surface of baby’s skin and then go to work reflecting away the harmful UVA and UVB ultra-violet rays.

Of course, basic zinc oxide or titanium dioxide are actually the most traditional of sunscreen ingredients. However, in this new micronized form they are both more effective and cosmetically more acceptable—no longer leaving the pasty white film of old (remember the lifeguard’s nose).
